Elastic Streets
Urban square variable design
Designed by: Matan Golan
Elastic streets started from an observation of a sketching fountain pen. The movement of the ink in the pen body leaves a trail, on paper, but in the pen body as well. This evoked the question of the human traces in urban environment. A theoretical thesis of dynamic streets who observe themselves to the use of the humans among them - was established.
A theoretical urban town square was analyzed to identify the different walking vectors it contains. Preserving the main walking vectors in an exiting, dynamic structure was the essence of the project.
A double direction hydraulic engine system moves parts of the whole, and enables a variable uses of the “streets”. This way the urban town square changes according to weather and events, shifting from passageway galleries to bazaar, acknowledging the urban human necessities.
